The evolution of consciousness

The study of the evolution of consciousness is gaining momentum among researchers in different fields. Until now, the debate has been largely shaped by theories that concentrate on exteroceptive and cognitive systems, and neuroaffective theories have been notably overlooked. Antonio Damasio’s neuroaffective theory of consciousness proposes that the primordial mental experiences arise from homeostatic feelings, generated by the functioning of the interoceptive system in its unique bidirectional interplay with the body. Recent papers by Damasio and colleagues further support this rationale and open up new avenues for the comparative debate on the evolution of consciousness.

La evolución de la consciencia

La evolución de la conciencia comienza a atraer la atención de un número creciente de investigadores en diferentes áreas. El debate ha venido girando principalmente en torno a teorías centradas en sistemas exteroceptivos y cognitivos, relegando a un papel secundario a las teorías neuroafectivas. La teoría neuroafectiva de Antonio Damasio sostiene que las experiencias mentales primordiales surgen de los sentimientos homeostáticos, generados por el funcionamiento del sistema interoceptivo en su interacción bidireccional con el cuerpo. Los últimos artículos de Damasio y colaboradores ofrecen un respaldo adicional a esta propuesta y abren nuevas vías para el debate comparativo sobre la evolución de la conciencia.

Paco Calvo’s (2022) book “Planta Sapiens” offers a bold examination of plant intelligence and behaviour. It covers an array of topics at the intersection of botany and cognitive science, from the nervous system-like organisation of plants to the role of plants in inspiring a new paradigm in robotics. The author is ultimately concerned with the possibility of plant sentience, and “what it is like” to be a plant. In turn, Calvo considers the ethical implications of plant consciousness. The book leaves plenty of room for scepticism, especially regarding the basis for attributing sentience to plants. Nevertheless, it is an exciting invitation to explore the plant kingdom from a fresh perspective, rooted equally in scientific research and philosophical curiosity.

El libro de Paco Calvo (2022) “Planta Sapiens” ofrece un examen audaz de la inteligencia y la conducta de las plantas. Cubre un rango de temas en la intersección de la botánica y la ciencia cognitiva, desde la organización “cuasi-neural” de las plantas a su rol en inspirar un nuevo paradigma en la robótica. El autor se preocupa, principalmente, de la posibilidad de que las plantas sientan, y de “cómo se siente” ser una planta. Calvo considera también las implicaciones éticas de la consciencia vegetal. El libro deja sitio sobrado para el escepticismo, especialmente en cuanto a la atribución de sensibilidad a las plantas. Sin embargo, es una invitación excitante a explorar el reino vegetal desde una perspectiva fresca, fundamentada por igual en la investigación científica y la curiosidad filosófica. Leer más →

Jonathan Schooler is Distinguished Professor of Psychological and Brain Sciences at the University of California Santa Barbara. Author of more than 200 scientific articles, his research covers a wide range of disciplines including psychology, philosophy, and meta-science. In this interview, I talk with Dr. Schooler about some currently highly active research areas that he and his team are contributing to move forward, from mindfulness and how to apply it in the classroom, to mind-wandering and its multiple facets, to consciousness and the development of an emergent theory to explain it. The interview closes with Dr. Schooler offering advice to starting researchers aiming to launch their scientific career.
